Studying and Evaluating the Cost of Quality in Construction Projects

Abstract

Background:

The cost of quality is a major part of the total cost of any project. It is necessary to pay attention to the measurement and determination of the cost of quality so as to identify qualitative problems and opportunities for improvement of the work done .

Objective:

This research aims to study the cost of quality in the construction projects by : identifying the categories and items of the cost of quality through theoretical literature then using Pareto analysis to find the high impact categories and items on the cost of quality, designing a survey questionnaire to demonstrate to what extent items and categories of quality costs have been applied ,in addition, to find the relative importance of the costs of prevention and appraisal items in reducing the cost of failure.

Discussion:

Pareto analysis showed that 73% of the categories of the cost of quality are concentrated in prevention and appraisal cost. The field survey showed that prevention and appraisal items have an importance influence in minimizing the failure cost. Where the quality audit cost is the highest of the prevention cost, and the top of the appraisal costs are cost of tests and inspection, maintenance of measuring and inspection equipment.

Conclusion:

There is awareness of the state and private companies to the importance of defining and applying quality cost items in construction projects, but there is a lack in registration and an administrative system that manages these costs.
